Getting Started

Passé composé is used for completed past actions: “I did”, “I went”, “I ate”. In TEF/TCF speaking, this tense is essential for describing your last weekend, work experience, or what you did yesterday.

Note: The phonetic approximations below are guides. Listen to native speakers saying J’ai parlé, je suis allé, ils ont fini with real audio to catch liaisons and silent letters.

1. Basic Formula

Passé composé has two parts:

auxiliary verb (avoir/être) + past participle

Present Passé Composé English
Je mange. J’ai mangé. I ate / I have eaten.
Elle travaille. Elle a travaillé. She worked.
Nous finissons. Nous avons fini. We finished.
Je pars. Je suis parti. I left.

2. The Avoir Pattern

Most verbs use avoir.

Subject Example English
j’ J’ai parlé. I spoke.
tu Tu as travaillé. You worked.
il / elle Elle a fini. She finished.
nous Nous avons mangé. We ate.
vous Vous avez écouté. You listened.
ils / elles Ils ont attendu. They waited.

Past participle shortcuts:

Verb Type Ending Example
-er parler → parlé
-ir -i finir → fini
-re -u vendre → vendu

3. The Être Pattern

A few motion verbs take être.

French English
Je suis allé(e). I went.
Tu es venu(e). You came.
Il est parti. He left.
Elle est arrivée. She arrived.
Nous sommes restés. We stayed.
Ils sont sortis. They went out.

Note: With être, the past participle may agree with the subject: elle est arrivée, ils sont arrivés.

4. Common Irregular Participles

Verb Past Participle Example
avoir eu J’ai eu de la chance.
être été J’ai été malade.
faire fait J’ai fait mes devoirs.
prendre pris J’ai pris le bus.
voir vu J’ai vu le médecin.
lire lu J’ai lu le message.
écrire écrit J’ai écrit un courriel.

5. Negation in Passé Composé

Negation wraps around the auxiliary.

Positive Negative
J’ai mangé. Je n’ai pas mangé.
Elle a travaillé. Elle n’a pas travaillé.
Nous sommes sortis. Nous ne sommes pas sortis.

6. TEF/TCF Mini-Answer

Hier, j’ai travaillé le matin. Après le travail, j’ai pris le bus et je suis rentré à la maison. Le soir, j’ai étudié le français pendant trente minutes.
(Yesterday, I worked in the morning. After work, I took the bus and came home. In the evening, I studied French for thirty minutes.)
